Over 15 million Brazilians face severe food insecurity

About 15.4 million Brazilians (7.3% of population) faced severe food insecurity during 2019-2021 period, according to a FAO´s report released on Wednesday.

From 2014 to 2016, period that preceded the judicial parliamentary coup against former President Dilma Rousseff, food insecurity impacted as many as 3.9 million people (1.9% of population), FAO´s document said.

According to FAO, the figure jumped to 61.3 million Brazilians during the 2019-2021 period, as it´s extended to severe or moderate food insecurity. Such a number accounted for 28.9% of the Brazilian population, nearly a third of the country that has some 213 million inhabitants. Regarding moderate or severe food insecurity, it impacted about 37.5 million Brazilians from 2015 to 2016.

In the case of the Americas, FAO´s study revealed that hunger affected 8.6% of regional population in 2021, directly impacting 56.5 million, four million more than in 2020.
