Covid-19 cases double in Uruguay

Uruguay reported with alarm a 96% increase of Covid-19 positive cases, from 2,830 to 5,549 in a week’s time.

The comparative data confirmed a previous warning by the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas that “suddenly there is a biased interpretation that the end of the emergency is the end of the pandemic, no”.

An analysis of the portfolio indicated that these are outbreaks generated at the work level that were passed on to families, which are believed to be due to a greater circulation of a variant of BA.2 with a greater capacity to spread.

Salinas added that it cannot be ruled out that they are due to a high mobility and that some other viral sublineage circulates when traveling abroad, and emphasized that “there is no data on presence, which does not mean that there is absence”.

Due to this, the portfolio in charge will open next week a schedule for the fourth dose of immunizing vaccine for the age group of 18 to 48 years old, mainly with comorbidities, but priority will also be given to travelers.

For his part, Julio Medina, professor of infectious diseases and advisor to the health portfolio, explained that with the fourth dose “the benefit is more evident for people with comorbidities, not for healthy people in that age group”.

The vaccination for people over 50 years of age was brought forward a week ago, while medical authorities maintain the recommendation of the use of masks in closed areas and other preventive measures that have been discouraged since the announcement of the end of the sanitary emergency.
