On Sunday, Helsinki announced that Finland intends to join NATO, but this decision must be ratified by the Parliament.
Later, the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Ann Linde, stated that the ruling Social Democratic Party is in favor of joining the military bloc.
On May 13, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his nation opposes the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO, since both countries have members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Chancellor, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said in Berlin that most Turkish oppose the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO and called on his government to block it.
According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the alliance believes it can reach an understanding with Ankara on this issue.
