The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, will be absent from the IX Summit of the Americas because he considers it an exclusive meeting that does not represent the values of his country and the needs of the region.
“Consistent with the principles and values of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, I reaffirm that a Summit of the Americas that excludes American countries will not be a full Summit of the Americas, and if the exclusion of brotherly peoples persists, I will not participate in it,” the president wrote in his Twitter profile.
The United States, host country of the meeting, decided to exclude Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela under the argument that they are nations where democratic rights are violated.
Washington’s decision was rejected by leaders and governments of the continent and international organizations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The Bolivian president added to his arguments that his country “bases its international relations on the Diplomacy of the Peoples, with inclusion, solidarity, complementarity, respect for sovereignty, self-determination and collective construction of the Culture of Dialogue and Peace”.
The hemispheric meeting will be held in the city of Los Angeles from June 6 to 10 with an agenda that will address issues related to migration and health, points on which the excluded nations have much to contribute.
Political analysts wonder what kind of Summit of the Americas would be in Los Angeles with the absence of so many countries, however, Washington, with its silence, seems to minimize the importance of the events.
