Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with 40.6 percent of the valid votes, is leading the race for the October election, according to a new poll published on Tuesday.
The study by the National Transportation Confederation (CNT) and the MDA Institute shows the runner-up, with 32 percent, the far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro.
The difference between them is 8.6 percentage points. In a previous poll in February by the same consulting firms, Lula had 42.2 percent and Bolsonaro 28. Now the CNT/MDA poll reveals that the founder of the Workers’ Party (PT) would win in a runoff against the former military officer by 14 percentage points (50.8 percent against 36.8).
Such an advantage would be shorter than in the second month of the year, when Lula emerged with 53.2 percent and Bolsonaro 35.3.
On Monday night, the former labor leader gave continuity to the launching of the Vamos Juntos por Brasil movement and thanked in Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais (southeast), the unity of the parties that make up the alliance that supports him and former governor Geraldo Alckmin as the future electoral ticket.
