Authorities of Beijing, the capital of China, denied reports of a potential confinement to curb the outbreak of Covid-19 that left more than 900 cases since late last month.
Xu Hejian, a spokesman for the municipal government, assured that there is no need to buy or stockpile large quantities of food and other commodities because the metropolis will continue to function as usual.
“It is only a rumor that Beijing will be confined. Daily supplies will not be affected,” he noted at a press conference.
However, he called on all residents of the municipality to opt for telecommuting, stay home next weekend and take the PRC tests scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
According to Xu, the new round of mass testing aims to uncover hidden infections with the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (which causes Covid-19) and thus neutralize any risk of spread.
This Thursday Beijing supermarkets again recorded an avalanche of consumers seeking to stock up in fear of confinement, as some areas of Chaoyang, Haidian and Fangshan districts interrupted the rental of cabs, while Shunyi will only maintain service to and from the airport.
The local government describes the epidemiological situation in the Chinese capital as very complicated and decreed fifty areas at risk of transmission of the coronavirus.
