The National Coordinator of Indigenous Peoples of Panama (Coonapip) reiterated its commitment to defend and protect their territories, threatened by illegal occupations by settlers.
In a statement on its most recent Ordinary General Assembly, held in the community of La Bonga, Emberá Wounann collective land, in the Caribbean region of Chagres, Coonapip denounced that illegal logging of forests produces an increase in the deforested area.
This activity, they affirmed, is carried out indiscriminately, in complicity with public officials who respond to private interests in connection with institutions such as the Ministry of Environment, the National Land Authority (Anati) and the Ministry of Government itself.
They also contested that a similar story is taking place in the six comarcas and collective lands, which for more than five years have been demanding the granting of land titles, in accordance with Law 72 of 2008.
The irreparable damage to the environment, fauna and biodiversity, they said, is another sign of disrespect for the native authorities.
The 12 highest authorities of the congresses and councils that make up Coonapip committed themselves to redouble their efforts for the highest priority issue for their peoples, which is territorial security.
