Haiti aims to adopt a new national budget

Haiti could soon adopt a new budget for the current fiscal year, which will allocate three billion gourdes (about 28 million dollars) for social programs, it was reported on Friday.

Economy and Finance Minister Patrick Boisvert said that the law will take into account the current social and political situation, in addition to including the problems the country is facing, such as insecurity, instability and the impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

In this sense, the minister stated that the Government must work to increase its revenues through the General Directorate of Taxes and the Customs Administration.

The allocation for the social programs will help populations to cope with inflation, by the opening of community restaurants, distribution of hot meals, food kits and cash to vulnerable people, in addition to providing buses for the transportation of students, Boisvert stated.

Haiti has been without a finance law for around two years, after the National Assembly, the body that must approve the budget, became dysfunctional, after the mandates of all legislators and two thirds of senators expired.
