Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will present on Thursday to Congress an electoral reform that will create a new institute, save 1.2 billion dollars and drastically reduce the number of legislators.
At his morning press conference, the president confirmed the initiative he is submitting to the House of Deputies and expects the reforms of 18 articles of the Constitution and seven transitory articles to be approved.
Those in charge of drafting the proposal explained the main details in the course of the press conference, such as specifications of the new National Electoral Institute, less bureaucracy, fewer officials and a significant salary adjustment. Its official name will be the National Institute of Elections and Consultations.
In addition, the current 500 seats in the Lower House will be reduced to 300, and those in the Senate to 96, while the number of legislators in the municipal assemblies will be reduced to 45.
In addition, it proposes the elimination of plurinational candidates and only uninominal candidates would remain to guarantee a greater and better popular participation in the election of their political leaders and to strengthen democracy.
The financing of political parties will be substantially cut and much emphasis will be placed on reducing the costs of any electoral process to a minimum, so that elections in Mexico will no longer be the most expensive in the world, as they are considered to be.
There will be better facilities and transparency in the participation of Mexicans living abroad and those who are outside the country at the time of voting, who can vote electronically.
