Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today accused the West of launching a total hybrid war against his country, which also covers the information spectrum, using the crisis in Ukraine as a pretext.
He noted the United States and the European Union (EU) appropriated the title of “the beacon of democracy” to grossly violate their international obligations to ensure freedom of speech, equal access to information, including from other countries.
The Chancellor recalled that in 1990-1991, as part of the “wave of euphoria for universal human values”, numerous documents were adopted within the framework of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), TASS news agency reported.
He warned that, however, “as soon as Russia began to express its assessments, began to rely on its true and legitimate national interests, all Western commitments on the need to ensure free access to information, which were adopted at that time, were forgotten and buried.”
Lavrov stressed that this is another feature of the methods applied today by the leaderships of Western countries, in blatant violation of international law, which they prefer to replace with some of their own rules.
“One of these rules precisely lies in the fact that when the West does not like something, it simply blocks access to information from corresponding sources,” he denounced.
The minister pointed out that the West denies Russia, its media, its opinion on what is happening in the world, the applicability of all these international commitments in favor of freedom of expression and free flow of information.
