Mexico received almost five million tourists in two months

Mexico received 4,895,000 foreign tourists in January and February of this year, the Tourism Secretariat (SecTur) reported.

According to the agency’s website, 3,071,000 of the total were considered excursionists, that is, they do not visit the centers or destinations nor do they make reservations but they do consume and spend, while another 1,824,000 tourists do adhere to specific plans.

In the first two months of the year, 4,801,000 Mexicans traveled abroad, of which 4,233,000 were hikers and 568,000 tourists.

Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco wrote that in January and February the border flow generated a revenue of 579 million dollars, which represented a 13% growth compared to 2021.

Although it is a high figure, it represented only 57 percent of the level back in 2019, the official said.

Torruco added that the main travel reasons among border tourists and hikers in said two-month period were visiting family and friends, shopping, medical care, pleasure, work and business.

According to the Secretary, in 2021, even with the pandemic, the total border flow generated a revenue of 3,556,000 dollars, meaning that a recovery of 2,868,000 dollars is necessary, that is, 44.6 percent in order to reach the 6,424,000 dollars raised in 2019.
