A total of 1,026 Ukrainian marines, including 162 officers, voluntarily laid down their arms in the city of Mariupol, the spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry Major General Igor Konashenkov reported on Wednesday.
As per the report, 151 wounded Ukrainian troops from the 36th Marine Brigade received primary medical care at the scene and were later moved to the Mariupol city hospital for treatment.
The Russian military foiled an attempt by ultranationalists to escape from the city, which has nearly been taken by Russian forces and popular militias, by disguising their vehicles as Russian ones, but their cover was blown. As a result, 50 neo-Nazis were killed and 42 surrendered.
The Deputy head of the People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Eduard Basurin, told the Russia 1 channel that operations are being conducted aimed at fully liberating the port of Mariupol from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Hundreds of mercenaries hare making up those troops.
“The seaport is completely under our control, operations are underway to clear out the area, because someone may be in hiding somewhere, which is why we have to find everyone,” he said.
He explained that the next task will fall to the sappers, since a large part of the port is mined
