Brazilian lawmakers reject bill on fake news

The Chamber of Deputies of the Brazilian Congress rejected the urgency requirement of the proposal that seeks to avoid in Brazil fake news.

The bill failed to pass by 249 votes to 207; in all 257 votes were needed for its approval.

The initiative received criticsm during the entire session. The Parliament´s member Marcel Van Hattem considered that the proposal limits freedom of expression and truth.

“To avoid the spread of fake news, the victims will be the truthful information”, he said.

The author of the proposal, deputy Orlando Silva, stated that the objective is to make the Internet a “healthier” environment.

He warned that the release of false news has such an impact on public life that Parliament can no longer ignore it at the risk of reinforcing judicial activism.
