SNAI creates Crisis Committee to Address Prison Emergency in Ecuador

The National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) indicated that it formed a Crisis Committee in response to the events that occurred today in the prisons of Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo, El Oro and Cotopaxi.

The Committee will attend to the eventualities generated, and will gather information at a territorial scale, with the aim of articulating effective actions.

“Simultaneously, the pertinent security protocols remain activated with elite groups from the National Police, the Armed Forces and personnel from the Prison Security and Surveillance Corps, who carry out appropriate actions to maintain order and control within the centers” , said the SNAI in a statement.

In addition, he added that those deprived of liberty will not be transferred, while they carry out their normal rehabilitation activities. “Only those who incite violence and do not want to be part of the social rehabilitation process will be relocated.”

The Minister of the Interior, Patricio Carrillo, pointed out that the State cannot be subject to those deprived of liberty. “Anyone who generates acts of indiscipline and does not submit to the disciplinary actions of the regime, in prisons, will be transferred,” he said.
