China warns US about consequences if Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan

China warned the United States on Thursday that it will take strong measures if House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, and repeated its rejection of the announced arms sale to that island.

China’s Foreign Ministry ratified its opposition to any type of official exchange between the United States and Taiwan, and demanded that the House of Representatives respect the One China policy.

Beijing will proceed with decisive actions “to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the United States will bear full responsibility for all consequences” if Pelosi travels to Taiwan as planned.

Similarly, the Ministry of Defense presented a note of protest to the representatives of the United States for its contract with Taipei that provides for the maintenance of the Patriot air defense systems worth nearly 100 million dollars.

The move was considered a serious violation of the One China principle and the statements that support bilateral relations, as well as interference in the internal affairs of China and its security interests.

The military contract is part of a plan announced in 2019 by the White House to supply war equipment worth two billion dollars to to Taipei. The international community approved with 170 votes a resolution in 1971 that considers the People’s Republic of China the only legitimate representative before the United Nations and recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.
