The Russian presidential spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, said that Russia rejects any accusation of an indiscriminate killing of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha and proposed that the issue be examined by the United Nations Security Council.
“We categorically reject any accusation. In addition, we believe that this issue should be discussed at the highest possible level,” Peskov said, referring to the proposal that the matter be brought before the UN.
“We know that this initiative has been blocked. Our diplomats will continue to make active efforts so that this issue is included on the Security Council’s agenda. The issue is too serious,” he stressed in statements to the press.
Peskov questioned the veracity of the footage of civilian victims in the streets of the city in question, in the province of Kiev, allegedly killed by the Russian military.
The official assured that the materials presented show “indications of fake videos”, according to experts from the Russian Defense Ministry, and emphasized that “the facts, the chronology of events do not speak in favor of the credibility of these statements either.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed out on Monday that the alleged event in Bucha is a “staging” that the West and Ukraine spread on social media, while also constituting a provocation that threatens international peace and security.
