The gradual military deescalation in the Kiev and Chernobyl directions does not mean ceasefire, the head of the Russian delegation at the negotiations with Ukraine and presidential advisor Vladimir Medinski warned on Tuesday.
He noted that the proposals presented on Tuesday in Istanbul by Ukrainian authorities represent the first concrete aspiration formulated by that country and implying a compromise, TASS news agency reported.
The Russian representative explained that in response to that step, Moscow took another one, referring to the gradual military deescalation in the directions of the cities of Kiev and Chernobyl.
He explained that the deescalation of the offensive against Kiev is necessary because the decision making authorities are located in that city.
Medinsky noted that the specific details “of what the suspension or deescalation of the two-way conflict will mean” will be reported by the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces shortly.
The Russian Defense Ministry indicated that taking into account the results of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations in Istanbul, it decided to reduce military actions in the Kiev and Chernobyl directions.
He noted that the decision was made in response to the need to increase mutual trust, as well as to create conditions for further negotiations and signing an agreement on the neutrality and non-nuclear status of Ukraine.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stressed on Tuesday that his country’s military operation in Ukraine will continue until the set goals are achieved.
The Russian chief negotiator told RT television channel that there is still a long way to go to prepare an agreement between Moscow and Kiev on terms that are acceptable to both sides.
“The second big step on our part is related to the possibility of holding a summit at the moment when the foreign ministers sign the prepared treaty,” he said.
