Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement, Lavrov says

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, declared today that there are possibilities for his country and Ukraine to reach an agreement, because the West began to understand its long-standing serious mistakes.

Interviewed by Serbian media, the senior official considered that for “clear” reasons it is unlikely that these countries will recognize it “out loud”.

He said that, nevertheless, Russia has reason to believe that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has listened to Moscow’s most serious and legitimate security concerns and is beginning to understand them.

On the other hand, he stated that the European Union (EU) proved its absolute inability to be a guarantor for resolving conflicts, as it did in February 2014, when it secured an agreement to resolve the situation in Ukraine between the government and the opposition.

He recalled that when the opposition broke the agreement, “the EU simply kept silent and started talking about some democratic processes.”

According to Lavrov, the West sets itself the task of slowing down Russia’s development by imposing sanctions, so it will always find a reason to apply them.

The head of Russian diplomacy stressed that punitive measures against his country never ended and were in force even before 2014, when the coup d’état took place in Kiev.

In his opinion, the West is disappointed that its plan for the final development of Ukraine was not fulfilled, so the sanctions introduced meant its irritation at such a failure.
