The first day of negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkey concluded on Tuesday without confirmation so far about a second round of talks.
Both parties met in the coastal city of Istanbul, the fifth onsite meeting after the special military operation carried out by Russia in the Donbass in late February.
Previously, both delegations had held talks three times in Belarus and once in the Turkish city of Antalya, with the attendance of their foreign ministers.
Before the meeting, the host president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, championed a ceasefire agreement and stressed that progress in this sense would pave the way for a face-to-face meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelenski.
In late February 2021, Moscow launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the goal of protecting the integrity of the self-proclaimmed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, which had been besieged by the Ukrainian Government for eight years.
The operation came after a request by these governments to face increasing attacks perpetrated by far-right nationalist and neo-Nazi groups.
Despite the fact that Moscow warned that this operation would not hit civil facilities and its main goal is to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, Russia has been the target of several packages of measures with the stated aim to cripple its economy.
