The Pentagon presented the government of President Joe Biden with a series of options to expand US military presence in Eastern Europe, CNN reported today.
According to the media, the president -who is on his way to Europe for meetings with allies on the conflict in Ukraine- could announce an increase in US forces present on that side of the Atlantic.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Tuesday the administration and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) partners will discuss “longer-term adjustments” of alliance forces on the European side.
Possibilities outlined by CNN include Washington deploying more US troops on a permanent or rotating basis, which could lead to -more and potentially larger- field exercises.
In addition, Sullivan mentioned the United States could build a new traditional military base somewhere in Eastern Europe, although that is considered an “extreme” option due to the huge financial commitment it represents.
Since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began almost a month ago, the US government has repeatedly announced its arms support for Kiev and has approved millions in funds to facilitate this aid.
Media such as The Washington Post even published that long before the conflict, since the end of last year, the Pentagon equipped Ukrainian fighters with weapons and equipment useful for fighting in urban areas.
Russia alleges that one of the objectives of its warlike incursion is to prevent the neighboring nation from continuing to militarize, which constitutes a danger to the security of the Eurasian country and the region.
