Israeli health authorities on Wednesday announced the discovery in two patients of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, never before detected in the world.
It combines the BA.1 and BA.2 subvariants, Health Ministry Director-General Nachman Ash told 103FM radio station.
We do not yet know what the significance is, although it is almost certain that the two people were infected abroad, the new variant could have been formed here, he stressed.
In recent weeks, the contagion rate in Israel dropped significantly after suffering the worst wave since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020.
According to official data, more than 1.2 million people contracted the disease in January 2022, the figure surpassed 960,500 who tested positive in 2021.
