Chinese company demands compensation of USD 480 million for stoppage of Río Blanco mining project

This to avoid a new international lawsuit against the State

The vice president of the Chamber of Mining of Ecuador, David Larenas, warned that there are several political groups in Ecuador that are trying to break down mining activity in the country.

Given this, he stressed that the Chinese company Junefield Ecuagoldmining South America, a concessionaire of the Río Blanco mining project, has raised a compensation of USD 480 million to the State to avoid a new international litigation.

This would be a reparation, since this project has been paralyzed for more than two years, because according to a judicial decision the rights of prior consultation of the neighboring community of Molleturo, in Azuay, were violated.

“The activities in the mine were halted without legal support and there is already a lot of evidence that the area has been taken over by illegal mining and all its related criminal activities.”

As indicated by the vice president of the Chamber of Mining of Ecuador there is also concern in businessmen, since there is no legal certainty for the request for popular consultation presented by the prefect of Azuay, Yaku Pérez.
