The World Health Organization (WHO) disclosed guidelines on Wednesday about health care for abortion without risks, seeking to prevent the 25 million unsafe cases that occur every year.
Performing the procedure using a recommended method, appropriate to the duration of the pregnancy and assisted by someone with the necessary information and skills, is easy, this organization said in a statement.
However, it added that, tragically, only about half of abortions across the planet are considered unsafe, which brings about devastating health risks.
The possibility of obtaining a guarantee is a critical part of health care, WHO Acting Director of Health and Sexual and Reproductive Research, Craig Lissner, said.
He noted that almost all deaths and injuries due to an unsafe procedure are totally preventable.
That is why we recommend that women and children can have access to abortion services and family planning when they need it, the executive added.
WHO data reveal that insecurity in the procedure kills about 39,000 women annually and leads to hospitalization of millions of women due to complications.
Most of these deaths occur in low-income countries, with over 60 percent in Africa and 30 percent in Asia, and among women living in the most vulnerable conditions.
