This March 8, International Women’s Day, is commemorated with worrying figures in Ecuador. The country registers 28 femicides in just three months, according to the latest report from the Feminist Alliance for the Mapping of Femicides in Ecuador.
From January 1 to March 5, 28 femicides, transfeminicides and violent deaths against women were reported in 11 provinces.
Guayas is the most violent province for women. Of the total cases, 7 occurred in Guayas; 5 in Manabi; 4 in Los Rios; 3 in Emeralds; 2 in Imbabura; 2 in El Oro; while Pichincha, Orellana, Napo, Cotopaxi and Loja register one case in each province.
The ages of the women who were murdered range from 22 to 29 years; 9 were mothers, so at least 19 minors were orphaned.
With the 28 violent deaths, there are already 1,075 cases of femicide since 2014, in Ecuador; with an average of one death every 54 hours.
Likewise, this figure corresponds to 50% more cases of femicide than in the same first quarter of last year.
