Amnesty International asks the Ecuadorian Government to protect the life of the Ombudsman

They call it “ironic” that the people and organizations that reported human rights violations “are now at risk and without due protection.”

After the death threats denounced by the Ombudsman, Freddy Carrión, for his work in defense of the victims of the national strike of October 2019, the Amnesty International organization asked the Ecuadorian government to protect their life and integrity and that of his family. In addition, it must ensure that the Ombudsman’s Office can carry out its work of promoting and protecting human rights with autonomy, independence and free from threats or intimidation.

Amnesty International’s director for the Americas, Erika Guevara Rosas, said that in the crisis that Ecuador went through in October 2019, the Ombudsman’s Office “had a fundamental role in the documentation of human rights violations, the protection of affected people and the provision of independent information. ”

On February 11, the Office of the Ombudsman expressed alarm about threats, unfounded accusations and attacks with a political focus, and yesterday he denounced that there was a call alerting the placement of a bomb in his home, which turned out to be a false alarm.

They call it “ironic” that the people and organizations that denounced human rights violations “are those who are now at risk and without due protection.” Guevara said that the Ombudsman’s case is clear evidence of that situation. “The Ecuadorian authorities must immediately take the necessary measures to guarantee their security against the serious threats they face,” he added.
