Egypt calls on rich countries to compensate Africa for colonialism

(Prensa Latina) Egyptian President, Abdel Fatta El-Sisi, said that colonialism is the main cause of Africa´s social and economic backwardness, thus he called on Western powers to contributre to the continent´s development.

“Africa for historical resons was always left behind (…) and hence it is not reasonable that it continues paying the price”, the president pointed out at the inauguration of the Egypt International Petroleum Conference and Exhibition (Egyps 2022).

Therefore, we urge richer nations to provide financial support to African countries to address climate change and extend the transition period to meet renewable energy commitments, he stressed.

The cost of meeting these plans is paramount and Africa cannot afford such expenses, he said.

The president recalled that half of the continent´s population lives without electricity.

More than ten ministers from the sector, as well as high-ranking representatives from several coutries are participating in the event, considered the largest of its kind in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Also, delegations from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, the International Energy Agency, the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization, among other global and regional organizations attended.
