(Prensa Latina) After months of a downward trend, the number of people benefiting from unemployment insurance in Uruguay rose to 48,000, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security reported.
A four-percent increase was reported at the end of January, compared to December, 2021.
The Ministry noted that 79 percent of the total of insured people went under the category of total unemployment and the rest chose partial benefits, due to layoffs or the final or temporary closure of workplaces.
For its part, the Pit-Cnt trade union federation confirmed underemployment and discouraged workers who left the labor market where they need to return.
The economist and researcher on the labor movement, Alejandro Picco, described as encouraging the figures regarding the recovery of jobs last year, but he said that there is still job insecurity, meaning fewer working hours.
He added that a significant part of jobs were generated in the agro-exporting sector, with “a roof” or economic base such as those related to construction or projects about to finish.
Meanwhile, Uruguayan former Undersecretary of Economy Pablo Ferreri criticized the reduction of the tax deficit that the government is implementing, based on the reduction of salaries, pensions and investments in infrastructures that could create jobs.
