(Prensa Latina) Colombia’s Institute for Development and Peace Studies (INDEPAZ) on Tuesday reported that 14 social leaders were assassinated in January 2022, three of whom were ex guerrillas who were engaged in the process of reincorporation.
Two of the signatories of the Peace Agreement were assassinated after the Constitutional Court ruled the State of Unconstitutional Things due to the low level of implementation of the security guarantees component of the population in transit to civilian life and their families.
Some 13 massacres were perpetrated in the first month of 2022, seven more than in the same month in 2021, when INDEPAZ reported six. There were also 214 selective homicides, 98 threats, 58 attempted homicides, 25 cases of harassment, 17 forced disappearances and 16 mass forced displacements, the Conflict, Peace and Human Rights Observatory of the organization reported.
According to data from the organization, 1,300 social leaders have been assassinated since the signing of the Peace Agreement in 2016.
The latest fatal victim, assassinated on Monday, January 31, was Jose Euclides Gonzalez, a renowned leader from Norte del Cauca, who was the vice president of the Association of Workers Pro-Constitution Zones of the Peasant Reservations of Caloto and an active member of the Process of Popular Unity of South Western Colombia.
