Women’s organizations and organizations in defense of human rights spoke about what will be the second debate on the Organic Law Project that Guarantees the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy for Girls, Adolescents and Women in the event of Rape and rejected that the report, which will be known in the Plenary on Tuesday, January 25, establish deadlines for the interruption of this process.
At a press conference this Wednesday, the representatives of these organizations, such as the lawyer Johanna Romero, a member of the OLA Platform; the specialist in childhood and adolescence, Susana Guijarro; the lawyer and expert in Human Rights, Sybel Martínez; and Amazon Frontlines spokesperson and human rights expert, María Espinosa, agreed that the bill should not set time limits for unwanted pregnancies that have been the product of rape.
Johanna Romero recalled that since last April 28 abortion in case of rape is no longer penalized in Ecuador and stressed that with this law what is intended is to guarantee the right to decide of girls, women and adolescents for the interruption of pregnancy when they have been sexually abused.
“Deadlines must be discussed seriously and rigorously. We demand a law without deadlines. This is the conquest we achieved on April 28. Without deadlines, we managed to make this right a privilege for a few,” said the spokeswoman.
For her part, Sybel Martínez denounced that the rights of women and abortion for rape are being used as currency, political pacts and programmatic and anti-rights agendas that have resonance in the Government.
“Unfortunately on the issue of deadlines, the Commission has not been able to withstand this social pressure and has had to reconsider its wise decisions,” she stressed.
Likewise, the representatives rejected the advance declarations of President Guillermo Lasso to veto this bill without first having been debated by the Plenary of the Assembly and warned that they will be vigilant to the decisions made by both the Legislative and the Executive.
