In Sucúa, Morona Santiago, Ángel Eduardo M. was sentenced to three years in prison for committing a crime against wild flora and fauna.
Judge María de Jesús Jerves also ordered the sentenced person to publish a message regarding the prohibition of possessing animals in danger of extinction in a radio communication medium.
For three days, in the direct procedure hearing, prosecutor Dennys Benavides explained that, in November 2021, personnel from the National Police and the Ministry of the Environment went to a home in the city of Sucúa, where a spider monkey was found. chained to a metal column.
Once the man was interviewed, it was determined that the wildlife specimen was acquired from a local Shuar community.
The Prosecutor’s Office reported that the spider monkey is on the list of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and that, as it was a flagrant crime, the offender was arrested and the animal transferred to the Center of Wild Fauna Pass “Uñushi”, for their respective care.
During his testimony, the expert who carried out the recognition and assessment of the animal concluded that it was taken from its habitat at an early age and kept in captivity.
He maintained that he has lost much of the natural behavior of his species and that it would be difficult for him to survive without human care, so he would have to stay in a wildlife management center. In addition, the animal presented delays in its growth.
