Shipwrecks of migrants in French waters tripled in 2021

(Prensa Latina) The number of migrants who were shipwrecked off the French coast of Calais, in the English Channel, tripled in 2021 and set a dramatic record, the French Office for Immigration and Integration reported on Monday.

According to the statement, last year saw the highest number of attempts to cross the English Channel illegally, and the French coast guard saved 1,000 peole compared to the 341 people saved in 2020, that is, an increase of 194 per one hundred.

The number of average fatal victims also climbed, but no official data have been provided. The number of shipwrecks increased as well, and the worst of them occurred in late November, when 27 migrants were killed.

The report also noted that 31,103 of the migrants who were living in makeshift camps on the northern coast of France hoping to cross to the UK were taken in and included in the national system, 239 percent more than in 2020 (9172).

The number of these displaced people with a family or vulnerable doubled in 2021, going from 1,158 to 2,273.

For their part, associations working for the rights of migrants denounced the French State in court on December 20 for involuntary manslaughter and failure to provide assistance in the incident that occurred a month earlier, and demanded a moratorium on the almost daily dismantling of the camps, as well as the inhumane treatment given to these people.
