Ecuador’s capital on alert for increases in coronavirus cases

The sustained increase in coronavirus cases in the capital has forced the authorities to maintain the orange epidemiological alert throughout the Metropolitan District.

Yesterday afternoon, the Quito Metropolitan Emergency Operations Committee (COE) ratified this decision, to take restriction and biosafety measures necessary to take care of the health of the inhabitants.

According to the latest update from the Ministry of Health, regarding the health situation with a cut off of January 4, in Quito there are 188,833 people infected with Covid-19; with an increase of 480 cases in a single day; while in the entire province of Pichincha there are 204,090 confirmed cases.

With this background, the capital’s COE urged the National COE to evaluate whether or not it is appropriate to return to classes in person, despite the fact that the Ministry of Education ratified the schedule of progressive return with 100% capacity.

He also asked that they carry out training for parents and teachers of educational institutions on biosafety measures, vaccines and new variants of the virus.

Another request of the municipal authorities is that the application of the third dose be advanced for adults over 50 years of age who have already completed three months after the second dose.

The Metropolitan COE, in addition, urged the National COE to issue a rapid control document or circulation passport that contains the information on the vaccination scheme in digital format, with a QR code, to facilitate its review.

On the other hand, the Municipality of Quito will apply random tests in places of high concentration and will carry out random measurements of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
