Children hospitalized with Covid-19 in U.S. hits record number

(Prensa Latina) The number of children hospitalized in some US states increased along with the spread of omicron, a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that has nowadays caused 73% of Covid-19 cases reported in the United States.

Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania and New York are the most affected states, The Washington Post newspaper reported, with a 31% increase in Covid-infected minors admitted to health centers.

Even with the expectation that omicron will be less severe than other variants like Delta, specialists fear a surge in children cases in the coming days, especially among unvaccinated adolescents with underlying health conditions.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, nearly 7.4 million children and teens have been infected across the country. 170,000 were added to the total in the last week alone, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Despite alerts and hundreds of flights canceled as a result of the epidemiological situation in the United States, millions of citizens persist on their Christmas Eve trips.

US Transportation Department reported about 2.19 million people in airports across the country, the highest number since the rebound in travel for Christmas Eve in the last seven days.

Ballpark number of Covid-19 cases in the United States jumped to over 168,000 per day and only 62% of the population has been fully vaccinated, according to The New York Times.
