After the appearance of the first cases of the Omicron variant in Ecuador, the analyst Carlos Oporto made an analysis of the future of this virus in the country. In a conversation with Radio Pichincha, the specialist said that there are three cases of these infections in the official government figures, but that this data is an underreporting, since adequate tests are not carried out in the country, nor is there a mechanism that allows know the reality of the subject.
In Ecuador, he added, the Delta variant has been on the rise since October. The majority of cases of this variant are occurring today, with a rate that is growing, but so far it is not alarming.
The specialist pointed out that, in a few weeks, there will be a combination of infected by the Omicron and Delta variant, but it is not yet known how the country will be with it. However, if the increase in cases continues, with the average established to date, it is most likely that in three months the health system would collapse, around March 2022.
Oporto indicated that the Omicron variant is more contagious than the other viruses, therefore, he recommends continuing to use the mask and not agglomerate. Since the herd immunization has not been given, nor will it be given in the country.
An example is that, currently, in Guayaquil, there is a boom in infections with the Delta variant. But it is a slight and sustained increase, said Oporto, which has several free beds in hospitals.
Finally, the analyst indicated that in a country like Denmark, there is a reduction in hospitalization due to cases of infection of the Omicron variant. 7% of vaccinated people have gone to health centers, which is a low figure, he said.
