Ecuador confirms the first case of the Omicron variant

The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is already in Ecuador. This was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, on the afternoon of this Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

This is a 48-year-old patient from Quito, of Ecuadorian nationality, who arrived from South Africa, on a flight from Panama-Quito, on December 10. The man has both doses of the vaccines and is stable, with mild symptoms.

The engineer left the country in mid-November with two colleagues. It was planned that upon arrival in the country, these people carry out a mandatory preventive isolation of 15 days, however, the infected patient presented symptoms on the return flight.

“As soon as he arrived in the country, the MSP tested him and his two colleagues and it tested positive and a few minutes ago they gave us genomic sequencing and it tested positive for Ómicron,” Garzón explained.

150 people were traveling on the plane, who are already part of the epidemiological fence; while two companions of the zero patient who was a carrier of this new variant were isolated.

In the morning, the minister predicted that at any moment this alteration could reach the country. Ecuador joins the more than 75 countries in the world, in which this variant has been registered. Even in the United Kingdom, a person carrying Omicron died from contagion with this variation of Covid-19.
