Tanker fire kills 50 in Haiti

(Prensa Latina) The explosion of a tanker laden with fuel killed at least 50 people in Cap-Haitien, in the extreme north of Haiti.

The events occurred early in the morning, after the vehicle suffered an accident, and many citizens came to refuel for free, local media reported.

“In the vicinity of the fire, 40 charred bodies lay on the ground, including several women and children. We are far from making an assessment, at that hour because there must be dead bodies inside the burned houses,” one of the rescuers told Le Nouvelliste newspaper.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry lamented the events and announced three days of national mourning in honor of the victims.

“Three days of national mourning will be decreed throughout the territory, in memory of the victims of this tragedy that afflicts the entire Haitian nation,” he confirmed on Twitter.

He also announced that field hospitals will be deployed in the region, located in the far north of the country, to provide the necessary care to the victims, and offered condolences to family and friends.
