Migrants still in Mexico City in effort to reach US

(Prensa Latina) Thousands of migrants who have been moving to the border with the United States for 50 days are resting today in Casa del Peregrino (Pilgrim’s House) of the Gustavo A. Madero town hall, in Mexico City, where they spent the night.

The group, initially made up of 4,000 people, was reduced as dissatisfaction, fatigue or the acceptance of residencial facilities granted by the Mexican government decimated it.

Those who persist in the hazardous and difficult pilgrimage, with fatalities such as 55 deaths in a vehicle accident, 105 injured or serious confrontations with the National Guard in which two undocumented immigrants were killed, are firm in their belief that once at the border they will be allowed in the United States.

Their own spokespersons refer to the few who made it, which gives them hope, but those who did not have a different view, admitting that the setbacks are overwhelming in relation to those who were lucky enough not to be returned to Mexico.

Authorities in the Mexican capital created conditions for them to spend their first night in warm clothes now that the intense cold has started with the corresponding wave of influenza that is confused with Covid-19, although the latter is quite controlled.

Many migrants walk without face masks.

In the shelter set up in Casa del Peregrino there are mattresses, beds and other places for them to rest, showers and food, some donated by the people of the surrounding area and social organizations.
