The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) asked the Ecuadorian Government, through the Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Játiva, to facilitate a visit and meeting with former Vice President Jorge Glas.
Through a request signed by the executive secretary Tania Reneaum Panszi, the international organization specified that the visit to the former vice president, at the Cotopaxi Social Rehabilitation Center, is intended to follow up on the precautionary measures granted on December 31, 2019, a Once it was found that Glas is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights.
In the event that the government agrees to this request, the meeting will be held with the presence of the Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty, Stuardo Ralón; the executive secretary of the IACHR, Tania Reneaum Panszi; and María Claudia Pulido, Deputy Executive Secretary for Monitoring, Promotion and Technical Cooperation on Human Rights.
Likewise, the IACHR requested to meet with the authorities responsible for the implementation of the precautionary measures granted in favor of Glas Espinel.
“The IACHR expresses its interest in establishing a dialogue with the Ecuadorian authorities responsible for the implementation of said measure. If I have the requested consent, I will also be very grateful for the support of his illustrious Government in terms of logistics, security, biosecurity and transport of the delegation, “says the letter.
A commission of the IACHR is in the country, following an official letter from the Ecuadorian State, to verify, evaluate and monitor the prison crisis, within the framework of the human rights of persons deprived of liberty in Ecuador, in the context of al minus four major massacres that have left more than 230 inmates dead.
