Ecuador does not register cases of the new variant of Covid-19 called Ómicron and considered of concern, despite the fact that this alteration has already spread in at least 19 countries in Africa, Europe and America, according to the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón.
Garzón said that Ómicron is more contagious than the Delta variant, however, it does not bring even more adverse effects on infected people. She added that the Delta variant remains the most prevalent worldwide.
In this way, to avoid contagion with the Omicron variant in the country, the minister announced that vaccination with booster doses or third doses of coronavirus vaccines will start from this December 1, no longer from January 1, As planned.
This process will begin in all persons in whom six months have elapsed since the last time they were vaccinated with any of the Sinovac, Pfizer, AstraZeneca or CanSino formulas. That is, six months after the last time they received the second dose. This entire population will be immunized with AstraZeneca.
Garzón reported an increase in infections in several provinces such as Imbabura, Chimborazo and Zamora, for which she called on the public to maintain biosecurity measures. However, she clarified, there have been no significant outbreaks in the country.
Regarding the progressive return to schools with a capacity of 100%, the minister anticipated that this afternoon they will meet with the National COE to announce new decisions regarding the return to classrooms.
