2021 is configured as the most violent year for women and girls since femicide was classified as a crime in Ecuador in 2014, according to the latest study by the Alliance for the Monitoring and Mapping of Femicides in Ecuador, made up of women’s and women’s organizations. human rights.
The updated statistics detail that 172 women and girls have died violently for gender reasons in the country, from January 1 to November 15 of the current year.
The figure includes 103 femicides (60.4%), 7 transfemicides (4.1%) and 62 violent deaths of women due to organized crime. Of this total, 11 victims were girls and adolescents under 18 years of age, 5 of them were only between 1 and 4 years old.
PROVINCES WITH THE HIGHEST RATE OF VIOLENCE
Of the total of 172 femicides, only in Guayas 69 (40.1%) cases of murdered women are reported, this being the most violent province.
So far this year, in Manabí and Pichincha 32 cases have been registered (16 in each province), which represents 9.1% in each. Meanwhile, in the province of Los Ríos there are 15 (8.7%) cases of femicides. These are the provinces with the highest rate of violence against women and girls.
RED ALERT
On average, every 44 hours there is a violent death of a woman or girl in Ecuador, due to femicide or transfemicide.
Faced with this phenomenon and escalation of violence, organizations such as the Aldea Foundation, the Ecumenical Commission for Human Rights (Cedhu) and more have declared themselves on red alert.
