The latest statements by Fausto Cobo, director of the Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders in Ecuador (SNAI), regarding the role of prison agents, generated discomfort in the guides who denounced it to the Attorney General’s Office of the State.
In an interview with a television network, Cobo assured that the prison guide body “does not work.”
“The rehabilitation system is collapsed, that body of prison guides is useless, is useless. It is the public force, that is, the Police and the Armed Forces, which has to impose order and the presence of the State. That body of guides is not good for the damn thing, “said Cobo.
Faced with these accusations, the National Association of Active Prison Servants of Ecuador filed a lawsuit for the alleged hate crime.
The documentation for the beginning of this legal process was presented in the building of the State Attorney General’s Office, located in the north-central part of Quito.
The servers claimed that for the entire prison population, which includes at least 40,000 people deprived of liberty, there are 1,500 guides throughout the rehabilitation system.
What is hate crime?
In accordance with article 177 of the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code: “the person who commits acts of physical or psychological hate violence against one or more persons because of their nationality, ethnicity, place of birth, age, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation, cultural identity, marital status, language, religion, ideology, socioeconomic status, immigration status, disability, health status or having HIV, will be punished with a custodial sentence of one to three years ”.
