United Nations, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) Ahead of the International Day for Tolerance to be celebrated on Tuesday, the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres called for defending human dignity, fighting racism and forging peace. On Twitter, Mr. Guterres posted that only by embracing diversity and respecting each other will we solve the biggest challenges ahead of us.
He also pointed out that racism “is a global evil which remains prevalent in our societies.”
For this reason, Guterres tweeted ¨we must raise our voices against all racism and racist behavior. We urgently need to fight racism, dismantle racist structures and reform racist institutions.¨
On November 16, 1995, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance.
This document specified that tolerance recognizes universal human rights, fundamental freedoms of others and the diversity of peoples.
