Crisis in Ecuador’s prisons: An inmate dies, after a new confrontation at the Litoral Penitentiary

The states of exception decreed in Ecuador and in the penitentiary system have not managed to stop the confrontations in the country’s prisons and once again a prisoner has died after a new confrontation.

On the morning of this Monday, November 8, 2021, new fights were registered in the Litoral Penitentiary, in Guayaquil. However, the authorities reported the altercations a day after the events.

The National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) reported, this Tuesday, November 9, that during the day yesterday several shots were fired inside this penitentiary.

As a result of the shooting, a person deprived of liberty was injured. The victim was taken to a medical home after being hit by a bullet.

Due to the severity of the injury, the inmate died at the medical center where he was admitted. After these events, the Attorney General of the State and Criminalistics investigate what happened.

This new death of an inmate is reported a week after another confrontation inside the Litoral Penitentiary that ended with the lives of three prisoners, on November 1.

That is, four people deprived of liberty have died and a prison guide was injured in multiple clashes in the same prison in just nine days, and in the midst of a state of exception in the country’s social rehabilitation system.
