In Guayaquil, several educational institutions are teaching security protocols to their students, so that they know how to act in the event of a possible shooting, due to insecurity.
In an Educational Unit in Samborondón, during physical education classes, children rehearse the actions to take if they find themselves in the middle of a shooting. Erika Lainez, director of the institution and former Undersecretary of Education, said that students learn to remain calm and throw themselves on the floor:
“We have done several drills in case there is an accident, a shooting or something in particular.”
During emergency drills, students drop to the ground and cover their heads with their hands. In addition, trials are being conducted to hide behind walls and other spaces that allow them to dodge bullets, Lainez said.
“Just as there are protocols on earthquakes, there should be protocols on crime, (…) a national guideline is important.”
Some parents and users of social networks mentioned that the government must take action on the matter. Twitter user Lissetee Rosales said:
“It is not a bad idea that our children prepare for the worst and know how to face danger, what I do think is wrong is that the crime wave is being justified and the State does nothing about it, that is, this is going to go ahead and save yourself who can because Guillermo Lasso is busy evading “
On the other hand, some people mentioned that protocols are necessary. Israel Calderón, resident of Guayaquil, said the following:
“It is sad, but it is time to talk with the children about how they have to react if at some point they are in the middle of the bullets.”
Until September 8, 2021, the State Attorney General’s Office published the insecurity figures at the national level. Guayas is the province with the highest rates in different types of crimes: robbery to persons, 40.3%; car theft, 45.5%; home robbery, 20.7%.
