Uruguayan scientist warns of defiant presence of Covid-19

Montevideo, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) The former coordinator of the Uruguayan Honorary Scientific Advisory Group (GACH), Rafael Radi, warned today that the challenging situation of the Covid-19 pandemic will continue despite greater control at present.

He disagreed with the perception of the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, that the country is already in an endemic scenario, in a talk given before a journalistic panel on television.

‘In epidemiology, definitions are not mathematical, there can be different considerations and in my concept, the endemicity of this pathology will be established when we really achieve a new status quo, which we have not yet reached,’ he said.

He also said that ‘obviously the biology of the virus may involve new strains, even more transmissible than the ones that are there now’ in a phenomenon that will continue for some more years … .

The scientist called on Uruguayans to maintain the preventive measures against contagion so ‘that we do not have a complex end of the year’, as happened in 2020.

At the same time, the National Emergency System reported other figures of an increase in the spread of the disease here, with 294 new positive cases and 1,892 active patients, distributed in the 19 departments of the country.
