Violence in Haiti hinders UN operations

United Nations, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres´ spokesman Stéphane Dujarric warned on Monday about the increased gang violence in Haiti, including kidnappings, which affects UN´s relief operations.

Recent reports from UN humanitarian colleagues on the ground showed great concern about multiple crises Haiti is going through, including the aftermath of Aug. earthquake, Dujarric said.

Across the country, 4.3 million Haitians are experiencing a high level of food insecurity, compared to four million in August last year.

On the other hand, the resident representative of the UN Development Program, who currently acts as resident and humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, Fernando Hiraldo, stated that violence, looting, roadblocks and constant presence of armed gangs are obstacles for UN´s humanitarian assistance.

Haiti´s situation is further complicated by severe fuel shortages and reduced goods supply, he detailed.

In addition, he said Haiti´s growing insecurity not only hinders the arrival of humanitarian assistance but also creates new needs.

Since past June, gang violence in Port-au-Prince has displaced at least 19,000 people and affected over 1.5 million women, men and children.

On Friday, following manifold meetings without reaching an agreement, the UN Security Council (UNSC) finally passed a resolution extending the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) mission for nine other months.
