London, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) Human rights and civil liberties groups petitioned the United States again to give up extraditing Julian Assange, WikiLeaks reported on Monday.
According to the organization founded by the Australian journalist, the petition filed now by the American Civil Liberties Union and other institutions is based on recent revelations that CIA agents planned to kidnap and assassinate Assange when he was in asylum in the embassy of Ecuador in London.
The news, disclosed by Yahoo News, only increases our concern over the reasons behind this extradition order and the dangerous precedent that will be set, according to a score of orgnizations that signed the letter for US President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The United States wants to extradite the cyber activist to try him for the disclosure on the WikiLeaks website of thousands of secret files that exposed the war crimes committed by its soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Assange has been held in a maximum-security prison in London since the Ecuadorian government turned him over to the British police in April, 2019, after seven years of asylum.
In a four-week trial held in this capital last September, a British judge refused to turn him over to US justice for fear he would kill himself, but US district attorneys appealed her ruling.
