Human rights institution condemns deacon’s murder in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) The state Office of Citizen Protection (OPC) on Monday described the murder of Church deacon Sylner Lafaille as repugnant and unimaginable, amid the wave of violence that shakes Port-au-Prince.

Armed men attacked the First Baptist Church of Port-au-Prince on Sunday, killed the religious man, kidnapped his wife, while other believers were wounded.

The OPC asked the competent authorities to recognize their ‘failure’ in security matters, and underlined that, contrary to the statements by the opponents of former President Jovenel Moïse, after his assassination, insecurity worsened.

In recent weeks, the OPC has been critical against Prime Minister Ariel Henry, and called for his resignation following the scandal of his alleged involvement with one of the planners of the assassination.

Kidnappings and killings have increased since mid-August, despite that the gangs promise a truce following the earthquake that devastated the southern region of the country.
