Former Bolivian President Jeanine Añez might escape from prison

La Paz, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) Legal authorities in Bolivia ratified on Wednesday that former President Jeanine Añez must remain in custody because there is a possibility of escape to evade her responsibility in criminal acts.

In an interview with Bolivia TV, lawyer Thomas Becker, promoter of the trial in the United States against former President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada (Goni, 2002-2003) and his former Minister Carlos Sanchez Berzain, for the 2003 massacre in Bolivia, considered that there are signs that Añez might break out from prison, which is normal when extreme abuse has been committed.

Becker thinks that for this reason, she must remain in prison, and noted that in the trial for responsibilities for massacres against Goni, 13 of 15 defendants have escaped.

He added that of three of those indicted for the massacres in the cities of Sacaba and Senkata in 2019, only the former president is in prison, since former Minister of Government Arturo Murillo and former Minister of Defense Fernando Lopez are fugitives.

The attorney emphasized that victims have the legal right to seek justice and the Government must investigate and punish those responsible.

On the other hand, Bolivian Minister of Justice Ivan Lima explained the legal reasons why former de facto President Añez must face a liability trial.
