(Prensa Latina) Brazil´s Federal District (DF) was the country´s territory most impoverished between Q1 2019 and January 2021, as revealed by the Correio Brazilienze publication.
According to the sampling by economist Daniel Duque, researcher at the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, the percentage of Brazilian population in need went up in 24 of the 27 federative units.
As to DF, the study showed a 7.9% rise in poverty, ranging from 12.9 to 20.8% of population. Abject poverty grew 4.1 points (from 3.2 to 7.3%).
For the World Bank, an individual is considered in poverty as he shows a $5.50 income per day (some R$28.60).
In deep poverty, income is $1.90 per day (R$10.45).
DF´s poverty rate growth was much higher than in other units, although proportion of local residents in many regions is higher than in the country’s capital.
As a whole, Brazil´s poor people rate ranged from 25.2 to 29.5%.
‘During the pandemic, the country´s richest urban centers such as DF suffered a great impact on labor market,’ Mr. Duque stressed.
The economist insisted that ‘DF was one of the units most hit by Covid-19. It became one of the epicenters of the pandemic at times, especially around the Q4 from 2020 to 2021.’
